section 5 intro
Christopher Columbus wasn’t that great of an exploreras people think. The more major explorers were the explorers from the French. One of these explorers is Giovanni de Verranzano, he explored the new world for France. He had searched for a route to the West Indies. Two more explorers  Joliet and Marquette have followed Indians down the Mississippi for more than 700 miles. A Dutch man named Peter Minuit led a group of Dutch settlers to the mouth of the Hudson River. While he was there he bought an island called Manhattan Island from the Indians. A man named Henry Hudson had explored what is present day New York while looking for a Western route to the New World. There are many other explorers beside Christopher Columbus. In the 1530s a man named Jacques Cartier had sailed more than halfway up the St. Lawrence River. An explorer named Robert de Lasalle completed going around the Gulf of Mexico and named it Louisiana in honor of King Louis. Another explorer named John Cabot had gone on a 79 day exploration and found new land. He was an English man who actually found Newfoundland. A French explorer.

In 1524 Giovanni da Verranzano explored the New World for France. He searched for a route to the Indies. Verrazano was sent on the first voyages by the King of France to find a western route to China. He had 4 ships, 2 of them were shipwrecked, but luckily 1 survived and it was sent back carrying prizes such as gold, silver, and spices. He sailed south until he reached Carolina. Verrazano was the first European to enter New York Harbor.

Jacques Cartier was a French explorer, who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first who described and mapped the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of theSaint Lawrence River, which he named the country of Canada.

Peter Minuit was one of leader who decided to settle in America and in 1626 became the director and general of New Netherland. Over the next few years other colonists arrived and a large settlement was established on Manhattan Island. In 1636, Peter Minuit made arrangements with Samuel Blommaert and Swedish government to make the first Finno-Swedish colony.  By 1640 trappers almost wiped out all the beavers on Iroquois Island. Major French colonies were located in Canada and the Mississippi River Valley. (Nationmaster.com) Colonies were developed to export fur, sugar, and fish.

Jacques Marquette was a Catholic missionary and explorer. He was born in Laon, France. In 1666 came to Quebec, Canada and learned Indian languages. From 1669 to 1671 he worked in missions in Sault Sainte Marie (Michigan) and La Pointe (Wisconsin). Around this time, he first met Louis Joliet, who was trading with Indians in the same area. Joliet was a French-Canadian trader and explorer. Joliet was born near Quebec City and raised in a Jesuit seminary. In 1668 he decided that he didn’t want to become a priest and he became a trader with the Indians instead. From 1669 to 1671 Jolliet explored a lot of the Great Lakes region. During that time he became a great map maker, also worked as a fur trader, and met Marquette. In 1673 a French missionary Father Jacques Marquette and a fur trader, Louis Joliet, set out to reach the Mississippi.
